Iran Slams US-Israel Over UN Food Rights Rejection – Politics news
The spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry Esmail Baqaei, posted on X criticizing the United States and the Zionist regime for their 2021 opposition to UN Resolution 76/166, titled “The Right to Food”, which affirms the right to access to food as a fundamental human right.
Baqaei wrote: “Was the starvation of Gaza’s people not premeditated?”
On December 16, 2021, only the US and the Israeli regime voted against the resolution at the UN General Assembly.
The rest of the international community stood united in support of the resolution, which emphasized the prohibition of starvation as a method of warfare under international humanitarian law.
Baqaei argued that this opposition reflects “a deliberate policy to weaponize food against civilians,” saying: “Is their opposition to this resolution not clear evidence of a premeditated policy to use food as a weapon of war?!”
The criticism comes as malnutrition in Gaza worsens under Israeli brutal blockade and bombardment.
According to Salim Oweis, a UNICEF spokesperson in Jordan, Gaza will run out of Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) by mid-August unless new supplies arrive.
“That’s really dangerous for children as they face hunger and malnutrition at the moment,” Oweis said.
UNICEF has only enough RUTF left for 3,000 children, while 5,000 children were treated for acute malnutrition in the first half of July alone.
The World Health Organization warned that nutrition programmes for pregnant women and children under five may halt soon due to supply shortages.
Most supplies have already been consumed, and remaining stocks will run out without urgent replenishment, the agency stated.
The WHO said a programme in Gaza that was aiming to prevent malnutrition among the most vulnerable, including pregnant women and children under five, may have to stop work as it is running out of the nutritional supplements.
